3 Ways the Power of Your Mind Can Change Your Health and Your Life

The mind acts like an enemy for those who don’t control it.

Bhagavad Gita

Recently I had an experience that brought home to me how powerful the mind is and how it can literally heal our bodies and our lives.

I injured my back while jumping on a trampoline with my granddaughter. An x-ray the next day showed no fracture, so I just iced and applied heat and took it easy on that side for awhile, but the pain would always return whenever I did any type of exercise like yoga or weights, and would sort of mess me up for days. This went on for many months. Not being able to do yoga or weight train was very frustrating and had negative effects on my body and mind. So, finally I went to a back specialist who sent me to get an MRI, and it showed the trampoline incident had created an injury called a Schmorl’s Node (funny name, right?) where one vertebrae breaks into the vertebrae above it. It is not considered to be terribly dangerous, so the doctor referred me to PT (physical therapy) for 15 sessions and recommended shots into the spine with a steroid (“No, thanks” is always my answer to steroids).

After 10 sessions of PT, the pain was not getting that much better, and the physical therapist basically told me I needed to go back to the doctor because she didn’t think she could help me. I walked away feeling a little disoriented, but knew that my pain had more to do with my mind and emotions than with the actual injury at this point. I felt a little freaked out because I teach others to use their minds and emotions to be healthy and happy, and here I was faced with my own pain caused by my own thoughts and feelings, and I wasn’t even sure how I was going to get to the root of it.

The good news is that after suffering with this pain for 7 months, I completely eliminated the pain by using the power of my mind. I spent time meditating on the situation and remembered to use the skills I use with others, like Tapping and my Emotional Clearing Method. Oftentimes, we forget to use the skills we already have, so it’s always good to stop for a minute and remember what skills we have already to help ourselves.

Here are 3 ways you can tap into your own mental and emotional powers to heal your body, and your life:

3 Ways to Use the Power of Your Mind to Heal Your Body and Your Life

  1. Put your hand on the part of your body that has the pain. Ask it, “What is the message you have for me?” Then listen. Relax, and listen. Trust that you will get an answer. Believe that all the answers reside inside of you.
  2. Breathe into the pain, and allow it to melt, or dissolve. Notice if you are holding onto the pain, and ask yourself what purpose that might be serving. Continue breathing and releasing the pain. Let it go.
  3. Ask yourself what it is that you really need. The answer will come if you just believe in the wisdom of your body to communicate its needs and desires.

When we ignore our body and its messages, we get symptoms to get our attention. The typical response is to feel concerned, or even frightened, and often to run to the pharmacy or doctor to find out what’s wrong and get a pill that will make it go away. But, the mental, emotional pattern that caused the symptoms in the first place haven’t been resolved, so they just keep showing up either as the same symptom or as new ones.

While it’s important to check out any symptoms we have with a medical professional, and to have our wellness checkups on schedule, it is equally important to learn to listen to your body and its messages, aka, your symptoms. Tune into this powerful resource and discover the amazing power you have to heal your body and your life.
