Can Food Reverse Disease?
Hello Beautiful!
I’m so happy to be writing this blog and connecting with you again! I was in a HUGE crunch to finish my upcoming book, Rebuild Your Immune System in 10 Minutes a Day and get it to the publisher by my deadline.
When I began writing my book, I had no idea how time consuming and challenging it would be, or that getting a book finished, edited and to the publisher could be detrimental to one’s health. But I soon discovered that book deadlines can indeed knock you on your booty.
That’s what happened to me – my immune system got run down and I ended up with a mean eye infection and an even meaner sinus infection. But, here’s the good news – it forced me to rest and renew, which was sorely needed after so much pushing and shoving to get through the holidays and finish my book.
What I discovered
- Rest is a beautiful thing, and most of us don’t get enough of it. Rest is salve for the soul, and is the only way your body gets a chance to repair itself.
- Eating healthy food is crucial to wellness (boy, do the holidays (and stressful schedules) ever challenge even the healthiest eater!). Returning to my normally healthy diet really reminded me of how powerful food is, and that it truly is the best medicine. My blog today will talk about the powerful healing properties of food.
Food is Medicine (Scientific Proof)
While Asians have known for centuries that food is medicine, Westerners are only just beginning to understand the power of food to heal. Recent studies are showing that food has the power to prevent and heal disease, or to create disease. It can even change your DNA for better or worse. Every bite you take either tells your cells to create health or disease. That’s good news because it puts the power to create health right in your hands, which is an empowering concept.
In her book The Immune System Recovery Plan, Susan Blum, MD, writes, “Food is information that communicates with the body on a cellular level. What scientists now know is that the molecules in the foods you eat actually tell your cells how to behave as well or better than medicine can.” The name for the study of food as information to the cells is called nutrigenomics (nutrition + genetics). The study of epigenetics shows the relationship between lifestyle choices and DNA, or the human genome and demonstrates that lifestyle choices, including your nutritional choices affect how your genes express themselves. Nutrigenetics is the targeted science that demonstrates food’s effect on gene expression.
