Banish Brain-Fog with a Gentle Detox and Mindfulness Meditation
Does your brain feel “foggy” more often than you’d like? Do you struggle to focus or concentrate? Or, maybe you’re having a harder time remembering things lately?
None of these annoying symptoms are any fun. We all know how important it is to be able to think clearly, focus and concentrate – right?
But, how do you actually rescue your brain from the clutches of brain-fog, so you can finally be free from fatigue, confusion, forgetfulness, anxiety, depression and other debilitating symptoms of a foggy brain?
Having personally experienced severe brain-fog before I was diagnosed with MS years ago, and having recovered from it, I have found that the quickest way I know to reclaim your brain (and your life) is to embrace a short gentle detox along with practicing mindfulness meditation daily.
How Detoxing and Mindfulness Meditation Repair and Rewire Your Brain to Banish Brain Fog
A gentle Detox is the key to correcting most of the underlying causes of brain fog, which are largely dietary, such as:
- Eating the wrong foods, food sensitivities, sugar overload, low-fat diets, “wheat brain” caused by gluten, etc.
- Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of Vitamins B12, D, Omega 3 fatty acids, etc.
- Toxins in food, such as additives and chemicals added for flavor, color and texture, and prolonged shelf-life.
- The Brain-Gut axis (connection) means that whatever is going on in the gut with your digestion is affecting your brain as well, so what you eat is directly related to your brain health.
The brain relies on a steady stream of vitamins and minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and glucose from complex carbohydrates, in addition to getting enough rest and relaxation.
Eating the wrong foods also leads to inflammation in the brain – it wreaks havoc on your brain cells, actually killing some cells, and weakens the brain-blood barrier, allowing more and more neurotoxins from your body and the environment to penetrate your brain.
In short, what you eat is one of the most important factors for brain health.
Mindfulness Meditation Increases Memory, Focus, and Concentration
While eating healthy food is the secret to building healthy brain cells, mindfulness meditation is the secret to improving the brain’s functioning.
In 2011, Sara Lazar and her team at Harvard discovered that mindfulness meditation can actually change the structure of the brain: Eight weeks of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was found to increase cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which governs learning and memory.
Another of the main benefits of meditation that helps to reduce brain fog is that it improves attention and concentration: One recent study found that just a couple of weeks of meditation training helped people’s focus and memory while taking the verbal reasoning section of the GRE. Surprisingly, the increase in score was equivalent to 16 percentile points, which is significant.
